Summary

After successfully completing an Open Space and Green Infrastructure Study for Rutland County Council we were further commissioned to support the development of a Sport, PE and Active Recreation Strategy. The aim of the strategy was to provide a realistic structure for the County Councils Active Recreation Team in their contribution to the promotion and delivery of increasing participation in Sport, PE and Active Recreation within the local community. The project involved working to bring together the differing work programmes of the individual development officers in the team into one clear strategy.

Approach

Data to inform the strategy was captured through a consultation process which included several surveys, focus groups and a public consultation event. These sessions enabled representatives of the Rutland Local Sports Alliance, and members of the public to discuss positive aspects of provision as well as issues and concerns with sport and active recreation in the County.
This was supported by a number of workshops and focused meetings with the core sport and active recreation team to establish the best ways to work together. The strategy for 2009-2012 was shaped and drafted through continuing input from the team leading to a measurable and realistic action plan being created.

Outcomes

The strategy will be used by Rutland County Council to: maintain existing levels of provision, determine the future of sport development, and prioritise the use of resources. The strategy is also intended to inform, and be used by, other community and sports organisations within their planning processes. Rutland County Council are committed to developing the level of provision and opportunities for the local community to engage with sport and active recreation.
