Summary
Sport Structures were commissioned to support Badminton England in the development of their Whole Sport Plan through a facilitative session with the Executive Board.

Approach
Sport Structures worked with the CEO to develop the objectives for the weekend session with the Executive Board. The following outcomes were developed:

  • Understand the Whole Sport planning process
  • Agree the Vision and Objectives of Badminton in England
  • Consider Key Performance Indicators for measuring success
  • An understanding of what is Corporate Governance
  • Give clarity to the role and function of the Board
  • Give clarity to the Management team delivery and involvement of the Badminton Community in decision making
  • Understand and agree the differing roles and relationship between the Board and the Professional staff

The two day conference was delivered to develop the relationship between staff and Board members and the engagement of the teams led to a greater understanding of the different roles. Exercises were undertaken to develop a team approach to problem solving and this led to a new approach to working through and with committees.

The Modern Sport diagnostic model was used to objectively assess the Board performance and this led to a facilitative session on the role and functions of the Board and developed an understanding of governance in a sporting context.

Outcome
The facilitative approach led to the development of the overarching goals for the Whole Sport plan of:

  • Participation - to increase regular adult and junior participation by an average of 2000 players per month between 2004 and 2009
  • Pathway - to create a coherent pathway from recreational badminton through a structure that offers a range of playing, coaching and competitive opportunities for all abilities and aspirations.
  • Performance - to achieve a minimum of 5 Gold, 5 Silver and 10 Bronze medal successes in the 7 key target events [Olympic Games, World Championships (x3), Commonwealth Games (x2), European Championships (x2)] that will take place between 2005 and 2009
  • Profile - to improve the image and profile of badminton at national, regional and local levels.
The governance of the sport was re-considered leading to a new approach to dealing with operational matters through the committees of BADMINTON England
