Summary

The aim of the moderisation project was two fold:

a) The integration into one NGB of all the District Associations and a decision as to how best to resolve the management/membership and financial reconciliation.

b) The integration of Home Country Governing Bodies and Disability Associations into a coherent GB structure

Approach

The integration into one NGB of all the Divisional Associations and a decision as to how best to resolve the management/membership and financial reconciliation.

Sport Structures engaged in a process of consultation and facilitation with all the current Weight Lifting Divisional Associations within England resulting in an action plan to re-structure the Divisional Associations to match with the current Sport England Regions.

The process identified the current level of funding at divisonal level and the future membership structures to ensure a more effective and consistent structure that addresses the needs of the national association and the potential for seeking funding at a regional level to generate more members. An implementation plan to ensure a smooth change process was developed.

The integration of Home Country Governing Bodies and disability Associations into a coherent GB structure

Sport Structures engaged in a process of consultation with the Home Country Associations to identify their role and function and relationship to the UK wide body. This process identified the responsibilities for the UK and Home Country bodies. Overall policies were identified for the Association and the responsibilities of each body in relation to implementation seeking to implement consistent practice across the UK.

A similar process was undertaken with the disability associations with a view to an integrated association.

Following agreement of the new structure Sport Structures assisted with Board recruitment and insitigation of practice amongst board members.

Outcome

A new Board structure for the British body with a competence led selection of Board members based on a mixture of Home Country representation and non-weight lifting members. This new board structure was implemented and has led to a new focus to the British role in the development of the sport.

Following the implementation of the new structure, training is being undertaken using the “Modern Sport” model to identify the roles and responsibilities of the new Board.
