Outline:

The project involved the following two key outcomes:

  • Develop, and establish a national tutor training programme and supporting resources which are fully aligned to the units of the Professional Development Award.
  • Deliver to a minimum of 48 trainee tutors, based on a ratio of approximately 1 Trainer to 6 Candidates

We undertook the project using the following method:

  • Review current delivery model to match learning programme to make sure they reflect the National Occupational Standards
  • Develop an imaginative learning programme
  • Deliver tutor training for 48 candidates

Approach:

We reviewed the current delivery model of recognised tutor education programmes across Scotland including the different approaches to the delivery with a range of sports. This ascertained the type of delivery and any specific types of innovative delivery.

From these discussions we were able to describe the level of delivery and range of delivery. We will compare these programmes of delivery with the three Units for delivery:

  • Sports Coach Education Tutoring Roles and Responsibilities
  • Sports Coach Education Tutoring Styles and Application
  • Sports Coach Education Tutoring in Scotland

Developing an imaginative learning programme

In parallel to this we developed an innovative programme of delivery which provided national trainers with a range of tools to meet the learning outcomes. Our starting point was the learning outcomes and the learning programme gave as many opportunities as possible for potential sports coach educators to practice their new found skills in a positive environment recognising the different nature of sports. The learning programme reflected the different styles and needs of candidate sports coach tutors as well as the key outcomes as described in the Unit specifications.

The learning programme was reviewed against the unit specification and was written in a form that is easy for the national trainers to interpret. We developed the national trainer support resources which were led by a powerpoint presentation with embedded DVD, YouTube and other interaction tools including model making, to making the learning experience memorable yet still meeting the needs of the qualification. The aim was to make courses fun, interactive with an emphasis on the practical application of basic theory, modelling a variety of different delivery styles taking into account the different learning styles of the participants to ensure a positive training environment.

Each attendee left with a personal action plan to address areas where further work is required.

Tutor delivery phase.
We delivered a series of four tutor training three day programmes with candidate numbers ranging from six to thirteen

Outcome:

We used a range of assessment processes to meet the needs of the qualification. We carried out a detailed evaluation of the course seeking to identify the benefits of the course. Following this we met with the national trainers and reviewed the course made modifications and produced a comprehensive tutor support material. This consultation led to further improvements to the course before being handed over for the Scottish national trainers to deliver.

The course is the standard qualifications for sports educators in Scotland to enable them to deliver Coach and volunteer education programmes.
