Summary

UK Deaf Sport (UKDS) identified that there is a lack of awareness about deaf people in sport and that they needed clear evidence to make the case for increased support. We produced a review of literature affecting sports participation amongst deaf people in the UK.

Approach

We undertook a review of research relevant to the three themes, the Deaflympics, PE in schools and health inequalities for deaf people. The research was gathered from sources around the world, to understand what information was valuable and what research UKDS should be looking to commission over the coming years to ensure they have the evidence required to effect change.

Outcome

We produced a document highlighting current research into deaf peoples’ sports participation, in line with the focus areas of UKDS to support securing additional funds from Sport England for Deaf sport.
